and all that. It can seem a little overshadowed by Hallowe'en, not least because safety fears have reduced the number of people enjoying the back garden fireworks displays of our youth. It also used to be pretty common when I was growing up that we would get together with friends and family for firework parties. There was one friend in particular who put on an annual party with a most impressive bonfire, all through the 1980s. Including baked potatoes cooked in foil at the edge of the fire, if I'm remembering it right.
The BBC have an interesting article today on one supposed member of the plot to destroy James I's government. The poisonous atmosphere detailed there towards Roman Catholics embodied in 'Guy Fawkes Day' has all but died out now (except in deepest Suffolk and even there it's very much on the wane). This year, we have different betes noires to burn..
