We opened our bottles of
Augustiner Maximator Doppelbock this evening as a Lent treat. They weren't a disappointment. The beer was a ruddy dark brown which ended up with a nice thick head on it if given a little encouragement in the pouring. It was a big, hearty, sweet beer - although there was enough hop to it to prevent it becoming too toffee-ish and cloying. The backbone of 7.5% ABV gave it a bit of oomph too - a very well-integrated beer with a distinct Munich style to it - in the way the hoppiness carried through from start to finish. It reminded us of previous trips to the city, which is a lovely place to visit. A long way away if you don't fancy travelling by plane, mind you!
It certainly tasted quite a filling beer for
drinking during a fasting period. Although I'm not sure you'd be able to have too many without falling over..
